Be Busy Living: 3 Ways To Stop Watching Life From The Sidelines

Alternative title for this post: “Just Do It”, but Nike seems to have overdone that one a bit.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how interesting other people’s lives seem to appear in social media and how I never feel like I get done what I’d like to. And how I find so much inspiration to do so many things, but never end up doing them.

So here are some thoughts on the matter along with some “goals” of how to change.

Stop Researching & Watching Others

I’m a big-time researcher. I don’t like to jump in to anything until I’ve looked up everything I can look up. I want to know the unknowable. I want to know exactly what’s going to happen before I do something.

You know what? Sometimes you can’t know what’s going to happen. And that’s good!

While I’m watching to see how other people do things and see what happens when they try, I could have been doing it myself. Things like trying a new hobby, leaping to a new job, starting a blog, going to a new club or group…

Life Goal: There comes a time when you need to stop researching and stop watching everyone else while thinking “I bet I could do that”, and do it! See what happens. It could be great! No experience is ever wasted.

Let Your Inspiration Get You Moving

Inspiration is great! Why do you think so many people love Pinterest? All the inspiration you could want at the tip of your fingers. But how many times do we save those little inspirations and don’t let them fuel us into taking action?

Life Goal: Get inspired and then be busy living. Use that inspiration to try that new recipe, or workout, or project.

Stop Watching Other People’s “Greatest Hits”

Get Busy Living: Succeed By Working Hard Towards Your Goals (Not Watching Others)

This is a tough one with how surrounded we are by social media 24/7.

There are some people who just look to have the most enchanted and interesting lives, right? Their Instagram or Facebook are showing their “greatest hits”. It’s just the good stuff. You don’t see the sad and frustrating parts.

Another reason people’s lives look so interesting on social media is because they are out living them! While you’re sitting home spending hours looking at someone’s photos and updates, they are out living.

I can be so guilty of this. I get sucked in to Instagram and then feel like my life doesn’t look as pretty and fun as everyone else. I could be using that time to do interesting and fun things!

I sit and read about people being hugely successful instead of getting up and working hard to live a successful life myself.

Life Goal: Be busy living life and check in on social media once in a while for inspiration and research, and then get back to living life instead of being jealous of snippets of other people’s lives.

Essentially, I want to spend more time doing than researching or watching. I want to be busy living my life!

⇒Tell me I’m not the only one 🙂 Do you get sucked in to social media or spend so much time “researching” that you never just try it?

Ahhhh so true!! Taking heed by logging off of twitter now... but still glad it brought me to you! Don't remember being on your blog before, but it's so nice to "meet" you! Following you on facebook, twitter, and instagram now... ;P

Tuning out of Facebook and into what's going on around me is my goal. People only post the good stuff or photos that they think will make others envious. For most, It's not even about sharing the moment with others - it's a hey look how cool I am call for attention.

Thanks Janet! It can definitely feel that way. When I'm on for more than 10 minutes I start to realize that there's nothing new to see and I need to just go live my life!

I am a researcher too! But...I have just been letting go of that lately (it's so hard to do) and just doing it! Ha! Thanks for the great post!

I agree, especially with the third one. I often feel limited because "it's all been done before."

I think that sometimes too. I try to remind myself that everyone has a different perspective and you could do the exact some thing as someone else and it will still be different because you have a unique point of view.

I am a HUGE research junkie! I related to this post on so many levels! I love your alternate title, too! I used to be so guilty of watching or reading others success, but I've found that I was more so scared to try that I kept on reading. Finally [after spending all winter reading about gardening], I decided to grow a container garden. I wouldn't use the term success for my first time, but I did learn a lot about gardening. Now this year, I'm confident that it will be a success, because I learned from past mistakes. If I wouldn't have tried, I wouldn't know how to have a successful garden. I would still be daydreaming and admiring other people's successful gardens.

That's awesome Erin! I like my attempts at a garden too. Thank goodness we don't rely on it to survive though! But it's fun and I'm always learning. And watching those plants first burst through the soil is magical :)
