Love your idea of grouping items on a tray. I definitely feel less like clutter and more like decor that way.
We live in a small apartment and decorate simply because we have very little storage space. We put a pine cone wreath on our door and have a ceramic Christmas tree that belonged to my grandmother. We have two Hallmark ornaments that can stand on their own. One is the scene with Linus explaining what Christmas is all about and the other is a small scene of the Peanuts characters around Snoopy's doghouse. We put the tree and ornaments on a shelf with a red tablecloth under it. We have our stockings and one or two other small decorations, and we display any holiday cards we receive. It takes less than an hour to decorate and even less to undo it all. Other than that we display a pumpkin that will be carved on Halloween. The rest of the year we use whatever flowers are in season such as hyacinth in the spring and eucalyptus branches in the winter.

Thanks Holly, I'm glad you liked it! I'm totally with you on the Scandinavian style! I look at those house pictures on Instagram all the time. I love the minimalist style with more cozy and natural elements!

I love your tray idea! And also your thoughts about using favorite meaningful items every year. It's hard to scale back when the stores are full of good stuff but how much xmas décor do we really need? Recently I donated our big artificial tree after putting it up for 23 years. It was a pain in the butt assembling it and wrestling with all the lights. My daughter moved out last year and its time for new traditions! I'll be getting a table top pre-lit xmas tree. I'm saving our beautiful silver & gold decorations for my daughter, and I'm going with a more rustic, natural Scandinavian xmas look. I've been following some scandi accounts on Instagram and just love the more simple, natural look.

This is such a great post. It's very unique. I was thinking of exactly this topic lately, but didn't know how to tackle this issue. I have gotten some good ideas from it. I really like how you suggest to focus on a few areas, and to have larger pieces (or smaller ones on a tray or plate). That's quite helpful. I think that I will finally get to decorating this weekend!
