Why You Shouldn’t Follow “Must-Have” Clothing Lists

Why You Shouldn't Follow "Must-Have" Clothing ListsThey’re all over Pinterest these days:

“50 Must Have Wardrobe Classics”

“28 Closet Essentials For Fall”

“10 Staples Every Girl Should Own”

“10 Shoes Every Woman Should Own”

While I sometimes enjoy browsing through these lists of “classics” and “must-have items”, I think these lists can cause us to think that we need clothes that don’t make sense for us.

Why You Shouldn’t Follow “Must-Have” Clothing Lists

I Don’t Need Dress Clothes

I can dress super casually for my job. I truly don’t need to own dress clothes. I have a dress or two for special occasions and that’s about it.

These must-have lists don’t take into account how unique we all are.

If I had all kinds of dress clothes, they would never ever get worn. I have no need for high heels or pencil skirts.

I try to keep my wardrobe simple. I don’t want a closet full of clothes I’ll never wear.

It’s a waste of money and a waste of time when I have to dig through all of the things I’m never going to wear to get to the things I do want to wear.

I Hate Blazers and Collared Shirtscloset

Yes, they're classy and always make you look put together, but I just hate collared shirts and blazers. I'm not comfortable in them at all. Every time I try to wear one of them, I end up changing. And let me tell you, blazers and collared shirts are on every one of those must-have lists! I like the look of heels or wedges, but my bad back makes wearing such things a painful idea. Plus, I live in a tiny farm town. Where would I possibly wear heels or wedges?

I've Tried To Follow The Rules

I hate to admit that I've tried to own the must-have classic clothing items, and it just didn't work out. There is currently a beautiful classic trench coat in my closet. It fits great. I've never worn it.
The way I dress doesn't need to include classic, must-have, or trendy items. It just needs to work for me.
I have 3 pairs of the exact same yoga pants. I wear them every week. I have 4 different fleece zip-ups that get worn constantly. The must-have items that I own might just be the items I wear least.
Your wardrobe should be made up of only the pieces that work for you! That is why you shouldn't follow "must-have" clothing lists!

⇒ What do you think of these clothing lists? Have they ever made you think that you need something you really don't?

Yes!!!! I HATE blazers, always have. Maybe because I had to wear one in school. But it seems to be a staple in every "capsule wardrobe" video I watch. I also really dislike the trend of wearing white trainers with an otherwise dressy outfit - it's on every list. If I'm wearing trainers I'm wearing sports clothes/yoga pants with them. Anyway, thank you for validating me :)

I'm a school principal and I can't stand blazers. I love the way collared shirts look but I also end up changing... I no longer own either. (Same for heels!!) To look "professional" I wear dresses. I love dresses! I have dressy dresses and fun dresses. I also never dry clean anything. If it can't stand the water, it goes in the Goodwill box. I also shop resale and get fantastic things there.

I hear you on this. Funnily enough my friend shared another such lists with me a few days ago about the 50 staples you should have in your wardrobe. I went through the list and the majority of it was footwear and a lot of formals. I only have the basics - simple is good!

I agree with your conclusion. The lists just tick us into spending more money on clothes we may actually never wear. However, sometimes there's a great find. You hate blazers and collared shirts? Omg, I'm hurt :(.

Thanks Sara! I've tried so hard to like Blazers and collard shirts! They look so good on everyone else but I just don't feel comfortable in anything with a collar. I wish I did!
